
Inform yourself about what conditions your plant likes, does it like to be moist? Or does it prefer a dryer environment? You don’t have to know the Latin name of your plant immediately, its family is more than enough. Tropical plants, for example (often recognizable by larger green leaves, such as Monsteras or Calatheas, ...) come from areas where moisture is always present and where the humidity is often on the higher side. Whilst cacti and succulents are made to store moisture and thus to overcome longer dry periods.

Preferences

Where is your plant located? Plants that are in heated places or places with a lower humidity consume their water supply faster than plants located in a more humid place. For example, plants in a greenhouse, you don’t have to water those as often as plants who aren’t located in a greenhouse, because the humidity is much higher. The leaves evaporate less and therefore the plant lasts longer with its water. Plants located in full sun, especially in the warm summer months, evaporate water much faster and will therefore need water more often and quicker.

Which brings us to the next point; seasons; in Spring and Summer, plants use more water than they do in Fall and Winter. In Spring their growth period starts again and in the Fall they rest.

Location 

The amount of water you give your plants, depends on the size of your plant and pot of course, the bigger your plant is, the more water it drinks. But the bigger the potsize means that the soil will stay wet for a longer period, this is also one of the reasons, why I believe it’s so important that you plant your plant in the right pot size. This because, if the pot size is too big for the plant, the remaining soil will retain water much longer (and can cause problems in the long term).

There is still a big difference between plants in pots and those standing in open ground, but that’s a completely different subject of course.

What to consider when watering your houseplant

Informeer je even over welke omstandigheden je plant graag heeft, staat die graag vochtig? Of gaat zijn voorkeur uit naar een drogere omgeving? Je hoeft daarom niet meteen de Latijnse benaming van je plant te kennen, zijn familie is meer dan voldoende. Tropische planten bijvoorbeeld (vaak te herkennen aan grotere groene bladeren, zoals monstera’s of calathea’s,..) komen uit gebieden waar er altijd vocht aanwezig is en waar ook vaak de luchtvochtigheid aan de hogere kant ligt. Terwijl cactussen en succulenten zodanig in elkaar zitten dat ze gemaakt zijn om vocht op te slaan en zo langere droge periodes te overbruggen.

 Hoeveel water geef je?

Waar staat je plant? Planten die op verwarmde plaatsen of plaatsen met een lagere luchtvochtigheid staan verbruiken sneller hun watervoorraad dan planten op een vochtigere plek. Bijvoorbeeld planten in een kas, hoef je langer geen water te geven doordat de vochtigheid er hoog is. De bladeren verdampen minder en de plant komt dus langer toe met zijn water. Planten in de volle zon, zeker in de warme zomermaanden verdampen veel sneller en zullen dus ook sneller weer water nodig hebben. 

Wat ons bij het volgende punt brengt; seizoenen. In de lente en zomer verbruiken planten meer water dan in de herfst en winter. In de lente starten ze weer aan de groeiperiode en in de herfst gaan ze in rust.


Waar plaats je een plant best?

Hoeveel water je net geeft is natuurlijk afhankelijk van je formaat plant en pot. Hoe groter je plant is hoe meer water die verbruikt, maar hoe groter je pot is hoe langer je aarde nat kan blijven. Dit is ook een van de redenen waarom het zo belangrijk is dat je je plant niet té groot plant, de overige aarde houdt het water (te) lang vast.

Uiteraard is er nog een groot verschil tussen planten in pot en in de volle grond, maar dat is een heel ander onderwerp.

Hoe planten water geven

Easily and safely provide power with Mother's PowerCables. We provide extension cables, splitter cables to daisy chain devices as well as power adapters with international plugs.

Male connectors deliver power while female connectors receive power. Never use more extension cables as needed as they will always generate some small voltage drop and generate energy waste, even if minimal. Have this in mind (even with non-Mother products)

Proper use of PowerCables

PowerCables work at 24V. Our standard power adapter delivers 32Watts. This means you can power for example two PlantSpectrum16's (16Watt each) with a single power adapter using a splitter cable. Do never connect more devices than allowed or the power adapter will enter safety mode. 

Example: If an adapter can deliver 32W, and a device uses 5W, you can only connect 6 of those devices. Connecting 7x 5W devices can cause overheating of the adapter.

Powering Devices

After you have installed all the Nodes it is important to hide the cables in the Bars. Cables that are a bit too long and are coming out of the channels can be hidden with a loop as shown in the video below.

PowerCables

Eenvoudig en veilig stroom leveren met Mother's PowerCables. Wij leveren verlengkabels, splitterkabels om apparaten in serie te schakelen en stroomadapters met internationale stekkers.

De mannelijke connectoren leveren stroom, terwijl vrouwelijke connectoren stroom ontvangen. Gebruik nooit meer verlengkabels dan nodig, want deze zullen altijd een kleine spanningsval en energieverlies veroorzaken, ook al is deze minimaal. Houd dit in het achterhoofd (zelfs bij niet-Mother producten)

Correct gebruik maken van PowerCables

PowerCables werken op 24V. Onze standaard voedingsadapter levert 32W. Dit betekent dat u bijvoorbeeld twee PlantSpectrum16's (elk 16Watt) met één voedingsadapter kunt voeden met behulp van een splitter-kabel. Sluit nooit meer apparaten aan dan toegestaan, anders gaat de voedingsadapter in veiligheidsmodus en kan u deze beschadigen. 

Voorbeeld: Als een adapter 32W kan leveren, en een apparaat gebruikt 5W, dan kunt u maar 6 van deze apparaten aansluiten. Het aansluiten van een 7e apparaat van 5W kan in dat geval leiden tot oververhitting van de adapter.

Nadat je alle Nodes hebt geïnstalleerd is het belangrijk van alle kabels mooi in de Bars weg te werken. Kabels die net te lang zijn en uit de kanalen komen, werk je het beste weg met een lus zoals in onderstaande video weergegeven.

Correcte gebruik van de PowerCap

Install PlantSpectrum16 or PlantSpectrum32 in a cabinet, above your countertop or on the wall with Wall Mounts.

(Caution - Only use the 3M adhesive pads for clean and flat materials. If not we advise to fix the wall mounts to the ceiling with the screws.)

Position the corner pieces as shown in the image below. Screw the corner pieces on the grow light using the supplied black bolts and L-wrench.

There are 2 Sticky Pads included. Remove the white film (not the red film) and stick the Pads on the center of the Wall Mount.

Degrease the surface to which the lamp will be attached with alcohol or other cleaning agent so that no grease or dust is left behind. Make sure the surface is solid and dry. Then remove the red film from the Sticky Pads. Push the Wall Mounts firmly against the surface for 30 seconds. Make sure the Pads make full contact with the surface. After 20min the Sticky Pads have reached 50% of their adhesive strength and the lamp may be turned on.

The lifespan of the Sticky Pads is 24 months if installed correctly, temperature between 4°C and 38°C (40°F to 100°F) and relative humidity between 0% and 95%.

Wall Mounts

Met Wall Mounts monteer je PlantSpectrum permanent in een kast, boven je aanrecht of tegen de wand. Wall Mounts laten toe de lichtmodule te draaien om zijn as na installatie zodat je het licht beter kan richten. 

Positioneer de hoekstukjes zoals aangegeven in de afbeelding hieronder. Schroef vervolgens de hoekstukken vast aan de groeilamp door middel van de bijgeleverde zwarte bouten en L-sleutel. 

Monteer de hoekstukken

Er zijn 2 Sticky Pads meegeleverd. Verwijder de witte film (niet de rode film) en kleef de Pads in het midden van de Wall Mount. 

Positioneer de Sticky Pads

Ontvet het oppervlak waarop de lamp wordt bevestigd met alcohol of ander poetsmiddel waardoor er geen vet en stof achter blijft. Zorg voor een stevige en droge ondergrond. Haal vervolgens de rode film van de Sticky Pads. Duw de Wall Mounts stevig tegen het oppervlak aan gedurende 30 seconden. Controleer of de Pads volledig contact maken met het oppervlak. Na 20min hebben de Sticky Pads 50% van hun kleefkracht bereikt en mag de lamp ingeschakeld worden. 

De levensduur van de Sticky Pads is 24 maanden bij correcte installatie, temperatuur tussen 4°C en 38°C en relatieve vochtigheid tussen 0% en 95%.

Screw the Connector into the end of the Bar with a large bolt. Make sure the channels of the Connector and the Bar match. Tighten firmly using the L-wrench. Hold the longest part of the L-wrench in your hand for tightening firmly. Repeat for the other Bar.

Note that a connector has 4 holes but only two of them are threaded. Align the 2 connectors so that there is a hole and a thread next to each other. As shown in the picture below.

The connectors should be attached to each other with 4 bolts. Attention: make sure that the bolt goes through a hole first and then through the thread. Tighten them firmly with the L-wrench. It is important to mount the bars on a completely flat and soft surface.

Note: If you feel a bolt doesn't enter well, try loosening the other bolts first.

Schroef het verbindingsstuk met een grote bout in het uiteinde van de Bar. Zorg ervoor dat de kanalen van de Connector en de Bar overeen komen. Draai stevig vast met behulp van de L-sleutel. Je kan extra hard aanspannen door de L-sleutel met het lange eind in de hand te houden . Herhaal dit voor de andere Bar.

Let op, een verbindingsstuk heeft 4 gaten maar slechts twee daarvan hebben schroefdraad. Lijn de 2 verbindingsstukken zo uit dat er een gat en een schroefdraad naast elkaar zitten. Zoals aangegeven op de foto hieronder. 

Verbindingstukken positioneren

De verbindingsstukken moeten met 4 bouten aan elkaar worden bevestigd. Aandacht: zorg ervoor dat de bout eerst door een gat gaat en dan door de schroefdraad. Bevestig alle bouten en zet ze pas daarna stevig vast met de L-sleutel. Het is belangrijk dit te monteren op een compleet vlak en zacht ondervlak.

Tip: Als een bout niet goed in het gat gemonteerd kan worden schroef dan eerst de andere bouten iets losser en zorg dat beide bar modules goed gealigneerd zijn met elkaar in een rechte lijn.

Vastschroeven

Good humidity is very important, both for us and for our plants. The ideal humidity level in your home is between 40-60%. Some plants like it higher, to provide a specific group of plants with higher humidity - without affecting your whole room with it - you can put them in a greenhouse. Putting plants together (in groups) also helps to increase humidity.

1. Hang/put water bowls on/on your radiators. When the radiators are turned on in the winter months, they help the air to become drier.

If the humidity in your home is still too low, here are a few tips to get started:

Een goede luchtvochtigheid is zeer belangrijk, zowel voor ons als voor onze planten. De ideale luchtvochtigheid in huis is tussen de 40-60%. Sommige planten hebben het graag hoger, om een specifieke groep planten van een hogere luchtvochtigheid te voorzien - zonder je hele kamer er mee te beïnvloeden - kan je ze in een kas zetten. Planten samen (in groep) zetten helpt ook al om de vochtigheid te verhogen.

1. Hang/zet waterbakjes aan/op je radiatoren. Wanneer in de wintermaanden de radiatoren aan gaan zorgen zij er mee voor dat de lucht droger word.

Attach the two mounts to either side of the light module. You do this with the help of the two bolts and an Allen key. Make sure that the light shines nicely downwards and that the legs are properly secured.

Plug the cord into the adapter. Place the trays under the lamp. You can now start sowing your microgreens.

Watering your plants, sounds obvious right? But how much water do they need and what’s the best way to water them? We would like to explain you a bit more about this, because the number one cause of plants dying, is over watering. 

1) The soil feels dry; but that doesn’t mean it actually is, stick your finger (or a stick if preferred) around 5 cm deep in the soil. Does it feel moist? If there is some soil stuck to the stick, this means that the soil is still moist enough. 

How to check if your plant requires water?

2) Check the colour of the soil; lift up your pot, dry earth looks a lot lighter and weighs less than wet soil. The longer you own your plant, the easier it’ll be to recognize when water is needed.

3) Your plant shows you it needs water: a lot of plants curl their leaves or become droopy when they’re thirsty. Not having enough water to flow through their leaves and stems causes this, but do remember that yellow leaves are a sign of over watering. Damaged or discoloured leaves won’t recover, so it’s best to remove those leaves , as these leaves cost a lot of energy.

4) If still in doubt: use a water meter, you can buy those in most garden centers.

The best time to water your plants

Je planten water geven,  klink van zelfsprekend toch? Maar hoeveel water hebben ze nodig en hoe geef je ze nu het best water? Daar geven we jullie hier graag een beetje meer uitleg over. De nummer 1 doodsoorzaak bij planten is namelijk te véél water. 

Eens je je planten beter begint te kennen kan je al snel zien wanneer ze dorst hebben -doordat bijvoorbeeld hun bladeren opkrullen-  of wanneer je te gul bent geweest - gele bladeren. Het is  beter dat je eens een keertje te weinig geeft in plaats van te veel, waarom? Dat leggen we je graag uit.  


Liefst ’s ochtens, tegen de avond aan heeft je plant een hele dag van de zon kunnen genieten en is hij op temperatuur. Dan opeens een koele plets water kan hem doen schrikken, dus spendeer je zaterdagochtend eens aan het water geven en het controleren van je planten in plaats van ’s avonds nog snel na je werk.

Wanneer geef je het best water?  

1)	De potgrond voelt droog, maar dit wil nog niet zeggen dat het effectief zo is. Om zeker te zijn stop je je vinger (of een stokje als je dat fijner vind) een 5tal cm in de pot. Voelt het vochtig? Of hangt er nog aarde aan je stokje? Dan is de grond nog vochtig genoeg en kan je nog even wachten met gieten.

Maar voor je water geeft controleer je best even of die er wel nood aan heeft. Hoe doe je dat? Er zijn meerdere mogelijkheden:

2)	Kijk naar de kleur van de aarde of hef je pot eens op, droge aarde is lichter van kleur en weegt minder als natte aarde. Hoe langer je je plant hebt hoe makkelijker je gaat herkennen wanneer er water nodig is. 

3)	Wanneer je plant het aangeeft; heel wat plantsoorten vouwen hun bladeren samen of laten hun stelen hangen als ze dorst hebben. Ze hebben dan niet genoeg water om door de bladeren heen te laten stromen & dat tonen ze door de bladeren op te krullen. – Zo zijn gele bladeren vaak ook het teken van té veel water, beschadigde of verkleurde bladeren komen niet meer terug dus deze verwijder je best.

4)	Als je echt nog twijfelt kan je gebruik maken van een water meter, deze vind je in de meeste tuincentra.

Wanneer geef je het best water

It is important to act in time to notice that your plant is suffering from insects, so we advise you to take a close look at your plants regularly. There does not have to be a noticeable damage to be bothered by insects. The sooner you can intervene the better. Regularly showering or spraying your plants can help prevent this. 

Fungus gnats are small black flies of a few millimeters in size that live in potting soil. Especially in warm and humid environments they can become a real plague. They look like fruit flies and are sometimes called mourning flies but they are actually mosquitoes. 

This mosquito continues to reproduce throughout its life so a small infestation can quickly become very large. They fly around looking for conspecifics and nutrient-rich soil and therefore spread very quickly.


Recognize 

They feed on both dead and living plant material.  The fungus gnat do no harm except to lay eggs and fly around. However, their larvae eat the roots of plants. Especially if you sow and propagate a lot yourself, you will find that there are always fungus gnats.

What do they do? 

There is no direct cause, they normally live in warm humid environments which is why greenhouses are more sensitive to them. Wet potting soil is a feast for the fungus gnat.

Cause 

To get rid of this pest you should focus on fighting the larvae. The larvae are a few centimeters below the top layer of soil, so you can remove the top layer and replace it with a layer of play sand. Play sand is much harder for the mosquitoes to lay larvae in.

If the play sand still does not provide a solution you can also fight them with ant control. These remedies work in the soil and thus also on the larvae.

To get rid of the (already flying) mosquitoes faster you can use yellow sticky traps. Beware of pets, the plates stick very strongly (even to your hands) and especially to the coat of dog or cat. 

TIP 

Recognizing and combating the fungus gnats


Het is belangrijk om op tijd te handelen en dus ook tijdig op te merken dat je plant last heeft van beestjes, daarom adviseren we om je planten geregeld eens grondig te bekijken. Er hoeft niet meteen een opvallende beschadiging te zijn om last te hebben van beestjes. Hoe vroeger je kan ingrijpen hoe beter. Je planten geregeld douche of besproeien kan helpen voorkomen. 

Rouwvliegjes zijn kleine zwarte vliegjes van enkele millimeters groot die leven in potgrond. Vooral in warme en vochtige omgevingen kunnen deze rouwvliegjes tot een ware plaag uitgroeien. Ze hebben iets weg van fruitvliegjes en worden ook wel eens rouwvliegjes genoemd maar het zijn eigenlijk muggen. 

Deze mug blijft zich zijn hele leven lang voortplanten waardoor een kleine plaag al snel zeer groot kan worden. Ze vliegen rond op zoek naar soortgenoten en voedingsrijke bodems en verspreiden zich daarom zeer snel.


Herkennen 

Ze voeden zich met zowel dood als levend plantaardigmateriaal.  De rouwvliegjes doen geen kwaad behalve dat ze eitjes leggen en rond vliegen. Hun larven vreten echter de wortels van planten kapot. Vooral als je zelf veel zaait en stekt, zal je ondervinden dat er altijd rouwvliegjes opduiken.

Wat doen ze? 

Er is geen directe oorzaak, ze leven normaal in warme vochtige omgevingen vandaar dat kassen er iets gevoeliger aan zijn. Natte potgrond is een feest voor de rouwvarenmug.

Oorzaak 

Om van deze plaag vanaf te geraken moet je je focussen op het bestrijden van de larven. De larven bevinden zich een paar centimeter onder de toplaag van de aarde, daarom kan je de bovenste laag verwijderen en vervangen met een laag speelzand. Speelzand is voor de muggen veel moeilijker om larven in te leggen.

Mocht het speelzand toch geen oplossing bieden kan je ze ook bestrijden met bestrijding tegen mieren. Deze middeltjes werken in de grond en zo dus ook op de larven. 


Bestrijden 

Om sneller van de (al vliegende) muggen af te komen kan je gebruik maken van gele plak strips. Let wel goed op voor huisdieren, de strips kleven zeer sterk (ook aan je eigen handen) en al helemaal aan de vacht van hond of kat.

To give the plant all the food it needs to grow big en healthy, start by adding a bag of nutrients. Our nutrient packs, conveniently dosed to perfectly fill up one HydroPod. Shake well before use and tear open the bag and pour it in.

After adding the nutrients, add the water. Looking closely at the inside of the HydroPod, there are 2 marked lines. The upper marker indicates the amount of water to be added for the first fill. Fill up with plain water till the upper marker.

PlantCollar has a center hole and 3 slits with each 2 more holes. The center hole is the biggest and the outermost are the smallest. Insert your microgreen, sprout or small plant in one of these holes. Make sure the foam has grip on the plants you are transplanting without pinching them as this will cause them to die.

When transplanting microgreens from MicroPod, you can easily fit 3 microgreens in the smallest holes. After a while, they will be a lot bigger and might need to be moved to a bigger hole or separate HydroPod. 

You can place a microgreen in HydroPod but you can also position a cutting in the PlantCollar (for example from an existing Basil plant). Make sure the cutting touches the nutrient water and is about 2cm in the water.

In case you want to hydroponically grow rooted plants wash all the soil from the root before placing it and fill the HydroPod at start only to the lowest marker line so that the roots have access to enough oxygen.

Insert the plant into the PlantCollar

Finally, put the foam with your plant(s) back in HydroPod. Make sure the roots don't stick to the foam and are hanging in the water.

Now comes the fun part! Put your HydroPod in a sunny location or under one of our full-spectrum grow lights and avoid temperature fluctuations. Lay back, enjoy and watch it grow.

There is enough water to grow a microgreen to a mature plant without refilling, which takes about 1 month. For rooted plants this can be 2-weekly. Refill HydroPod when empty by following the same steps as above but fill to the bottom marker line instead of the upper line. This ensures that the plant gets enough oxygen to keep on growing.

After one month you are able to harvest a baby Pak Choi like pictured below. Root color should be white, indicating a healthy plant. Enjoy your crunchy super-fresh and pesticide free crop or herbs or keep on growing them to a next stage by refilling HydroPod as described above.

Klaar om planten sneller en eenvoudiger te groeien met HydroPod? Je kan zowel vanaf microgroente, gewortelde plant of stek met HydroPod planten hydroponisch laten groeien.  Let's start!

Om de plant alle voeding te geven die ze nodig heeft om groot en gezond te worden, beginnen we met het toevoegen van een zakje nutriënten. Deze nutriënten zijn perfect gedoseerd om één HydroPod te vullen. Schud het zakje voor gebruik, scheur het zakje open en voeg het toe. Heb je geen Mother nutriënten zakjes? Nutriënten toevoegen

Nadat we de nutriënten hebben toegevoegd, kunnen we het water toevoegen. Als je goed naar de binnenkant van de HydroPod kijkt, zie je 2 markeerlijnen. De bovenste marker geeft de hoeveelheid water aan die moet worden toegevoegd voor de eerste vulling. Vul het water de eerste keer tot de bovenste marker.

Water toevoegen

De PlantCollar heeft een gat in het midden en 3 gleuven met elk 2 extra gaten. Het middelste gat is het grootst en de buitenste zijn het kleinst. Plaats je plantje in een van deze gaatjes. Zorg ervoor dat de foam een goede grip heeft op de plant die je gaat verplanten zonder de stengel af te knellen. Je kan een microgroente in HydroPod plaatsen maar je kan ook een stek in de PlantCollar positioneren. Wanneer je gewortelde planten wil hydroponisch kweken was je alle aarde van de wortel alvorens hem te plaatsen en vul je de HydroPod bij start slechts tot aan de laagste markeerlijn.

Plaats tot slot de foam met je plant in de HydroPod. Zorg ervoor dat de wortels van de plant in het nutrientwater hangen.

Nu komt het leuke gedeelte! Zet je HydroPod op een zonnige plek of onder een van onze full-spectrum groeilampen. Vermijd temperatuurschommelingen. 


Enjoy en watch it grow

Microgroenten kunnen 1 maand doorgroeien tot volwassen plant alvorens weer water nodig te hebben. Bij grotere planten is dit eerder 2 weken. Vul de HydroPod bij als hij leeg is door dezelfde stappen te volgen als hiervoor maar leng nu telkens water aan tot de onderste markeerlijn. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de plant voldoende zuurstof krijgt om te blijven groeien. 

Bijvullen als het water op is

Na een maand kan je een baby Pak Choi oogsten zoals op de foto hieronder te zien is. De kleur van de wortels hoort wit te zijn, wat duidt op een gezonde plant. Geniet van uw knapperige superverse en pesticidevrije krop of kruiden of kweek ze door naar een volgend stadium door  HydroPod opnieuw te vullen zoals hierboven beschreven.

Oogst na 1 maand

Follow the steps to assemble PlantSpectrum in only a few minutes.

Attach the disc to the light module on the side of the power cord. Use the hex wrench and one of the supplied M4 bolts to attach the disc. Make sure that the bolt is attached to the correct side of the disc, namely the one with the countersunk hole.

Vertical setup

Attach the sliders to the light module to mount the light module with zipties in a rack, to fix it to a shelf with M4 bolts or to mount SteelWire mounts. Unscrew the 3 Torx screws of thinnest end-cap of the light module with the included Torx wrench, slide the sliders into the light module and reattach the end-cap. Secure the light module to a rack or shelf with zip ties or the M4 bolts.

Connect the switch and adapter to the light module and make sure you have the correct international plug attached to the adapter to plug it into your power outlet.


Power on PlantSpectrum

In our https://www.mother.life/en/discover/plants(plant database) you can look up your plant and find out the correct lighting distance. Plants need at least 6 hours of rest (darkness). In addition you can add a standard or smart timer to your wall socket to have PlantSpectrum light your plants in an automatic cycle.

Installing PlantSpectrum

Volg de stappen om in enkele minuten je groeilamp te monteren en je planten correct te belichten.

Bevestig de disc aan de lichtmodule aan de zijde van het snoer. Gebruik de inbussleutel en één van de meegeleverde M4 bouten om de disc te bevestigen. Let erop dat de bout aan de juiste zijde van de disc bevestigd word, namelijk die met het verzonken gat.

Verticale setup

Bevestig de sliders op de lichtmodule om de lichtmodule met zipties te bevestigen in een rek, met bouten vast te schroeven of om SteelWire mounts te monteren. Schroef de 3 Torx schroeven van dunste end-cap van de lichtmodule los met de bijgeleverde Torx sleutel, schuif de sliders in de bovenzijde en bevestig de end-cap opnieuw. Bevestig de lichtmodule met zip ties of de M4 bouten in een rek of aan een schap.
